Length 11 ft 6 ins. Two pieces. Test curve 2.75 lbs. 6 rings + tip. 30 mm dia butt ring. retail price: £119.99

20 lb 5 oz pike taken on the Special Deadbait rod recently. Float fished sardine, twitched back slowly.
These rods are designed for the pike angler who is mainly bank fishing at close to medium range and using average sized baits. Particularly suitable for Fen Drains, slow flowing rivers, Smaller lakes and pits and margin fishing in bigger waters. For occasional longer range fishing they are still very suitable, especially with smaller baits. Zander anglers will find them just right too as the action is progressive and the tip sensitive enough for playing them hard under the rod. They are equally at home with mono or braided lines. I mainly use them in conjunction with float deadbait set ups and livebait methods like sunk float paternostering, free roaming and trotting. My standard float set up and sunk float paternoster set up can be found detailed on the Fox Library page.

Zander can be caught at close range with a float in daytime or with leger or paternoster techniques after dark.

One of many big pike I have caught using close range tactics. This one, caught last season, weighed 22 lb 11 oz and took a whole joey mackerel.

A great deal of pike fishing today is carried out at close to medium range, often with a float and it is for these purposes that I have designed the Special Deadbait rod which is a little lighter than my Extreme Deadbait rod which is mainly intended for longer range leger techniques. The use of a float tends to become a little impractical at ranges beyond 50 meters or so and legering is a better option. Many livebaiting tactics are carried out at close range because of the limitations of casting baits without them coming adrift or being damaged on a heavy cast. Methods like free roaming and sunk-float paternostering for example. For these reasons, many anglers who largely carry out close to medium range tactics will require a different rod to the angler who is fishing at long range. For those anglers who mainly fish at closer ranges, I have developed this very light and responsive rod which will perfectly present baits using the tactics I have described. They have a crisp casting action, and a very nice playing action but don't be deceived. They can put baits quite a long way with a 3 oz lead when this is called for and they pick up line very well on the strike. For the angler who is fishing at long range with bigger baits for most of the time though, I would suggest you take a look at the Mick Brown Extreme Deadbait rod which will be more suitable. Contrary to popular belief, the biggest pike are not always out of casting range and I have caught many thirty pounders within float casting range. I've broken with tradition once again with this rod and made its length 11 ft 6 inches. There was absolutely no reason at all why it should be exactly 12 feet long as is copied time and time again. This improvement has eliminated unnecessary weight, improved the action and by using lightweight, high quality Fox Sliks 3 leg rings, we've reduced weight even more and minimised casting friction too. Believe me, you will not even realise you are using a shorter rod because everything is balanced accordingly. You will notice though that the rod is lighter and more pleasant to use and, when you hook up, you will feel in total control! With close attention to styling, I am happy that Fox have produced the rod I have been looking for, within a sensible budget price.

This rod is perfectly balanced with a Shimano 8000 GTE Baitrunner reel or similar. It's ideally suited to mono lines of 15 lbs b.s or braided lines of 30 lbs b.s. If you are regularly fishing in rocks, tree stumps, heavy weed and other snags, you would be better to chose the Extreme Deadbait rod and more suitable line.
